Dawoud Bey wanted to document a community he identified as a part of that visually disagreed with the stereotypes and presumptions people made about it. He has done this by photographing people in the street- some strangers, some maybe not from 1988-91, on the streets of various American cities. Bey gave the people he photographed a choice on how they wanted to be represented via collaboration with camera preparation. Many of these pictures have a sense of familiarity with the people casually leaning on a nearby object, or arms crossed or sitting down- all in a relaxed manner. Overall the ambience of this project defy's the racial stereotypes common in those times.

Sian Davey is a family and community- focused photographer.I chose this video because the photographer chooses to document her personal family- which is different from the others, who takes a less personal approach. The relationship between the photographer and the subject helps capture realism due to the family relation they have- they are used to Davey being there with a camera on the sidelines, which helps her to record real emotions from every day experiences.

It was important for Jalloh to document her chosen community because she feels memories are important. Someone being young and from south east London, she has kept a sort of visual diary- Most of her pictures are of strangers from her community. Jalloh has also taken a personal approach as she feels they mean a lot to her, with some reminding her of where she grew up- although to others it may look simple, just a nice photograph of a stranger.

Niall McDiarmid takes pictures of people he encounters on the street, the most significant focus being colour and recording of details.
The picture example in this video shows this, with the strong red component and noticeably yellow back round- the person also has bright blue hair and the red shirt duos the red sign. In contrast to the various yellow objects in the back round is eye catching, and most of the writing is legible, which shows the precision of the photographer in terms of clear frames. |

Artur uses textures and prints which reminds her of certain memories in her community - Peckham, in this case, using mainly fabrics but also other media. she uses media in picture presentations as well, using bamboo- "natural, but very strong and very smooth". She uses forms like these to carry on a physical manifestation of the meaning/purpose of many of her pictures

In this photograph I see a man wearing a snorkel due to his head being submerged in a bag half full of water against a blue plain backdrop, moving the focus of the viewer on the subject. The equipment (the water in particular) hints towards the universal theme of feeling trapped, in any form, in this case metaphorically- but paired with the obvious thought that many situations that lead to feeling trapped can be easily escaped (as a response to the bag, can be easily pierced to let the water drain). If I could interview the photographer I would ask about the message, or meaning he was trying to send or display to viewers, or his interpretation personally.
compared other examples of Mitchell's work I think the most noticeable thing instead of the color is the message its obviously trying to send to viewers. If i were to make a response inspired by Mitchell I would show a similar element by using vibrant colors, mainly using sunlight.

The subject is presented more so as a silhouette due to a very bright light with a natural back round shown through a large window. the main attraction to the picture is the light. In this case, the lighting makes certain areas vey bright meanwhile other frames are very dark, creating obvious contrast- for example, the surrounding frame of the subject (window frame) is almost black in comparison to the bright white and green in the centre. This relates to my influence from Tyler Mitchell's work- the theme of bright colors and clear lighting that almost highlights certain features of an image.

In this photograph the subject is facing sideways with the torso covered with a bright multicolored
cloth, leaning against a tree- with a building shown in the back round.I feel like the theme is light and color due to the clear lighting and variation of colors especially in the prop used. In comparison to the other pictures I think this one fit the brief the most- others were missing out on the subject preforming 'a leisurely activity', in this case, the subject simply appears. to be daydreaming, where others are looking directly at the camera. From this shoot I have now aim to show the subject in more of a natural pose. |
Peter Mitchell
Peter Mitchell takes the majority of his photographs in Leeds and in its surrounding areas. While working as a truck driver he would occasionally take a picture of a passing shop or building front in the 1970's . with the main body of his work being shop or building fronts, his work can be depicted as a mix of sentimental but also indifferent- it would be significant to someone local to that area, however to someone who does not recognize that place it would only be a photograph. |
